If you have yet to attend a horse race in Charleston, you're missing out on a quintessential Lowcountry tradition — dressing up and drinking under a tent. Located about 20 minutes outside of downtown, the race track at Stono Ferry is the home of the Steeplechase of Charleston, taking place next Sun. Nov. 11 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. General admission tickets are $30 and can be purchased online.

Interested in the horse racing aspect of the day? The Steeplechase is sanctioned by The National Steeplechase Association and offers $100,000 in prize money to participants. In a press release Steeplechase race director and former jockey Toby Edwards says, "Racing is a long-standing Southern tradition, so ending our racing season in Charleston is paramount to keeping up the tradition."

More interested in the other stuff? In addition to a day of racing horses, the Steeplechase features a holiday market, live music, and food trucks. Tailgating is obviously a big draw for many race attendees; general admission tickets get you access to the infield, where you can bring your own cooler. If you want to up the ante, peruse pricier tailgating options online.

A portion of proceeds from the Steeplechase benefit Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative, a local nonprofit that "seeks to improve education and job opportunities for all students throughout the tri-county area."
