Static in the Snow

When: Dec. 17-Jan. 5 2011
Phone: (843) 225-3683
Price: Free
It’s quite possible that Hirona Matsuda is my favorite Charleston artist. Her mixed-media pieces, made from found objects, have been seen around town lately at shows like this summer’s Contemporary Charleston, and they make me wish I had a massive amount of disposable income. Matsuda’s work, along with that of pen and ink illustrator Seth Corts, will be on view in Static in the Snow, presented by Shibboleth. In its second year, Static allows the two artists to explore both the beauty and the gloom of winter. While Corts draws ghostly Southern gothic tales, Matsuda uses objects like rusted nails and moth wings to create delicate and abstract assemblages. Opening night also features A Little Holiday Market, where art and gifts from Nick Jenkins, Lisa Abernathy, and more will be for sale. Coffee, wine, beer, and seasonal treats will be available for purchase. —Susan Cohen
