Yes, DHEC, please regulate birth centers. Not one person I've spoken with who supports birth centers disagrees with that point. Our concern, my concern (as a mom with a December 5th due date), is the way regulation has monumentally shifted practically overnight. I support logical regulation that increases the safety and efficacy of medical practice. Unfortunately, I don't believe this new DHEC interpretation does that. The specific reg being reinterpreted reads, "A physician must be on call and available to provide medical assistance at the birthing center at all times that it is serving the public," (source: http://www.scdhec.gov/administration/regs/docs/61-102.pdf). Charleston Birth Place, specifically, is in compliance. A doctor is available and on call. The new reinterpretation wants a doctor to be *physically present at all times*. I ask, what reasonable person interprets "on call" as such?
