Indeed, The North did not fight to abolish slavery as a moral evil but to prevent its spread westwards. The South, on the other hand, fought to defend slavery at all cost! It was all a matter of politics and economics.
The southern economy was a slave-based agrarian one. As Alexander Stephens stated in a famous speech slavery was the "cornerstone of the southern society.
The northern economy was an industrial-based one and depended on a wage-labor working class. As Lincoln stated in one of its famous speech he (among the majority of the white people by that time!) believed that the negro was inferior to the white. But he also stated that this was not an excuse to deny the darkies everything!
The North wanted slavery to stay and (if possible!) die out in the states where it´d already existed but there wasn´t a previous intention to abolish it before secession.
That´s the truth!
