Spoleto Festival USA Opening Ceremony

Phone: (866) 811-4111

Dancin' in the streets. There's always a surprise element to Friday's opening ceremonies, typically a performance from one of the season's most buzzed-about acts. Last year a couple of dancers from Spain's Corella Ballet performed a sexy routine, and the year before, it was Les Ballets Trockadero's towering ballerino (and former Charlestonian) Robert Carter. Who's it going to be this year? Our bets are on dancers from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, or perhaps one of the talented Chinese opera singers from Feng Yi Ting.

Feelin' hot, hot, hot. This event never fails to remind us that summer in Charleston starts early — some would argue on the first day of Spoleto, year after year. You will sweat, and you might even get a little sunburned at opening ceremonies. So you might want to leave the three-piece suit at home and break out the seersucker and madras.

Respect your elders. You can count on hearing plenty of speeches from festival bigwigs, and though they tend to spout the same thing every year, what they're saying bears repeating: Spoleto Festival is awesome. Our city should revel in the bragging rights that come along with it, and applaud the people who've made it possible year after year.
