Spoleto Festival USA Opening Ceremonies

When: Fri., May 28, 12-1 p.m. 2010
Price: Free

Join Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. and guest dignitaries as they officially open the Spoleto season. Includes a surprise appearance by one of Spoleto's artists and a musical prelude by Piccolo Spoleto's Brass Ensemble.

Dramatic entrance
The Spoleto season kicks off on Fri. May 28 with the Opening Ceremonies in front of Charleston City Hall on Broad Street. The road will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., resulting in a celebratory festival vibe. Mayor Joe and other dignitaries will do their official opening thing, and guests will also be treated to a surprise performance from one of Spoleto's artists. Piccolo Spoleto's Brass Ensemble will also play a musical prelude. You'll just need to figure out a way to fit it all in on your lunch break.

You had me at "open bar."
If you're lucky enough to score an invite, head to the Maritime Center later that evening for the Mayor's Reception. There will be Italian food, bevs, and an open bar. It's a great chance to mingle with Spoletians in a beautiful waterfront location.

Penny pinchers
Both of these events are free, so even if you can't afford to check out all the shows you want to this season, you can still feel like you're a part of the festival.
