YOUNG MAESTRO MAKES SPOLETO DEBUT. American sensation James Gaffigan, who seems destined for true greatness, will conduct the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in this year's single festival concert. But don't think that means a replacement has been found for Emmanuel Villaume, former festival director for opera and orchestra. The process of finding one is still very much in progress, and is much more complicated than you'd think.

GET READY FOR SOME HEAVY ORCHESTRAL FIREWORKS There'll be the hormone-stirring orchestral "Dance of the Seven Veils" from Richard Strauss's torrid (and horrific) opera, Salome. It just may be the sexiest operatic excerpt out there. Claude Debussy's rarely-heard Fragments from the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian should calm things down with a colorful and other-worldly interlude, before Sergei Prokofiev's wartime Symphony No. 5 blasts us out of the Gaillard with its spectacular and violent spirit.

THE SPOLETO FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA IS BETTER THAN EVER So says newly-appointed festival Resident Conductor John Kennedy, who picks the SFO's players each year from over 800 of the nation's top conservatory grads. And, even though its members will be playing in this year's operas and regular series (Music in Time, Intermezzi), this concert will be your best chance to hear them in their full glory. Book early: remember, there's only this one festival concert this year. But it's a doozy.
