Sailing towards a better sea

Celebrate 20 years of Sperry Charleston Race Week this weekend. “In just two decades, this homegrown event has evolved to become the largest regatta of its kind in both North and South America. That’s pretty amazing given that in 1996, we had just 29 boats entered,” says Dan Dickison, media director of Charleston Race Week. You don’t have to be a sailor to take part in the fun — shoreside event passes are open to both participants and the public. Thursday night’s opening beach party ($40 per person) kicks off the weekend with live music by The Midnight City, a beach taco buffet, and Gosling Rum. Ahoy, matey. Saturday night you can dance to a DJ and enjoy an open bar for $20. The weekend’s not all about partying, though. With 20 years under its belt, Sperry Charleston Race week’s got history. The regatta was established in 1996 by members of Charleston Ocean Racing Association (CORA) who merged two area regattas — the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association’s PHRF Championships and the Charleston Palmetto Cup — into one. For the third year in a row, Charleston Race Week has partnered with Sailors for the Sea in their Clean Regattas Program. The idea behind the program is to reduce carbon emissions, ultimately reducing ocean acidification. Pledging to not idle a boat engine, to install a renewable energy source, and to use copper-free bottom paint are just some of the ways members of Sperry Charleston Race Week are participating in a “clean” regatta. For the past four years, Charleston Race Week has worked to keep sailors healthy, too. There will be qualified medical personnel on the water in case of an emergency. It’s called a boom for a reason, y’all. If you prefer shagging to sailing check out the beach parties, or just enjoy the boats from the safety of shore.
