Talented multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Rob Crow is still best-known among underground rock aficionados as a core member of San Diego indie band Pinback (a partnership between Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith). Crow first got his feet wet as a professional musician in the mid-'90s with the band Heavy Vegetable. When they broke up in 1995, Crow and singer Elea Tenuta started a new band called Thingy. His first full solo album, Lactose Adept, came out in 1996, shortly before the formation of Pinback, who recorded sides for the Ace Fu, Absolutely Kosher, and Touch & Go labels. Crow's quirky and melodic new disc Living Well hit the streets this month, care of the Temporary Residence label. The songwriter played virtually everything on the record in his bedroom studio. Acclaimed Sub Pop recording artists Band of Horses — a trio who just relocated from Seattle to Mt. Pleasant — headline a recently-booked show with support from Athens, Ga., band The Vinyl Strangers, a power-pop quartet with a melodic sound. The Horses — singer/guitarist Ben Bridwell, drummer Creighton Barrett, and bassist Rob Hampton — released a smash-hit indie collection on the Sub Pop label last year titled Everything All the Time. Based out of Trenton, N.J., greaser-rock/psychobilly septet The Cryptkeeper Five -- lead singer Johnny, drummer D.T. Graves, guitarists Jimmy Ray Roswell and Scotty Engel, bassist Jack Arnone, sax player Blue Madigan, and keyboardist Nicky -- came up playing horror-show, Misfits-inspired punk rock-style stuff. These days, they're digging deep into the earliest style of rock 'n' roll -- from the King to the sock-hop and doo-wop champs. They return to Charleston this time behind a new 15-song disc titled The Rise of Palace Depression (Bony Orbit), the follow-up to last year's "best of" compilation Pomade, Switchblades, and Their Goddamn Rock & Roll. Based in N.C.'s fertile Raleigh/Wilmington corridor, pop-rock band The Rosebuds -- keyboardist Kelly Crisp and singer-guitarist Ivan Howard (pictured) -- have stayed busy touring and recording over the last three years. Their brand-new concept album, Night Of The Furies (their third full-length for the Chapel Hill-based Merge label) is due in April. The collection takes a few sideways steps away from their mix of classic pop and rock styles toward a more synth-heavy, hipster disco-beat dance sound akin to Depeche Mode, mid-'90s era Fall, and Human League. Like their previous release, a full-length collection titled Birds Make Good Neighbors, the new disc features production from Brian Paulson with additional performances from such Tarheel all-stars as Justin Vernon, Matthew McCaughan, Mark Paulson, Charles Story, Jonathan Yu, Wes Phillips, Lee Waters, Daniel Hart, and Brad Cooke. Carolina party act Yo Momma’s Big Fat Booty Band celebrate a “CD Release” at the Pour House with a two-night stint this weekend. This seven-piece, fully costumed, horn-driven funk ensemble has been attracting swarms of dancing masses to their zany show for years on the regional club circuit. Based in Boone and Asheville, N.C., they now have a 15-song debut album titled Now You Know. “Our music makes people dance — it’s that simple,” says guitarist John Paul Miller. “When we play, people just seem to bounce up and down.” This spring, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band plan to tour throughout the Southeast and Gulf Coast and wind its way through Colorado and California, the Midwest, the Northeast, and back to Florida. "I'm still covering songwriters that I know and love and listen to," says world-class vocalist Madeleine Peyroux of her latest collection, the 12-song Half the Perfect World (Rounder). "But in a sense, everything on this album seems to be centered around understanding the world of jazz. When I get into how to interpret a song, no matter what kind of song it is, I view it from the same perspective." Peyroux is an Athens, Ga., native who split her time growing up in Brooklyn and Paris. She dove into the lounge/jazz world as a teenager, signed a solo deal with Atlantic Records in 1997, and released a debut record titled Dreamland. Her usual repertoire features favorites by the likes of Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald -- and a pile of danceable originals. Both a respected lyricist and acknowledged activist — one that seamlessly references both George W. Bush and Dr. Seuss within the same parameters — Spearhead frontman Michael Franti remains a formidable figure in both musical and, recently, filmmaking circles. Thumping Wailers-style reggae has long been the band’s specialty. But, since it was formed following the breakup of Franti’s politically-charged duo, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, in 1994, Spearhead has packed in an eclectic array of styles, from funky Afro-Caribbean soul to freestyle hip-hop, while maintaining a distinct split between their good-time reggae party vibe and the more socially conscious context of Franti’s protest anthems. Last summer Franti and Spearhead — bassist Carl Young, keyboardist Raleigh J. Neal II, drummer Manas Itene, and guitarist Dave Shul — released Yell Fire!, arguably their most personal set of songs to date. Almost 15 years into Spearhead, Franti and his bandmates sound most alive and well on their latest recording. If anything, Yell Fire! is a great showcase for the uninitiated to see exactly what this much-namechecked band is capable of. The lyrical content was inspired by Franti’s 2004 travels to perilous regions of Iraq, Palestine, and Israel. New Spearhead tracks such as “Time To Go Home” — which capsulates the Yell Fire’s intent with the lyric, “Those who start wars never fight them and those who fight wars never like them” — bear the lasting memories of Franti’s Mid-East journey. As has been the case with other Spearhead releases, the sum total of the album isn’t entirely political discourse, though, as guests like Pink and legendary Kingston “riddem” section Sly & Robbie drop in to help make the album’s more lighthearted moments just as substantial.
