Snapper Jack's Polar Bear Plunge

When: Sat., Jan. 1, 11 a.m. 2011
Phone: (843) 588-2362
Throughout the winter months, you can typically find me swathed in at least three layers of clothing at all times. Maybe more. But there are some Charleston souls, braver than me, who, for one day in January, strip off their sweaters and scarves and leap into the Atlantic Ocean for Dunleavy’s Polar Bear Plunge. At 2 p.m. on New Year’s Day, tons of people, who have collected donations for Special Olympics South Carolina, will take a brisk dip in the water at Sullivan’s Island. If they need some liquid courage ahead of time, the party really starts at 11 a.m. If you know any friends who are participating, give them a couple bucks, watch them safely from the shore, and stand ready with some hot cocoa and a Snuggie. You can also head to Folly Beach for Snapper Jack’s Polar Bear Plunge. —Susan Cohen
