Nuns and musicals seem to be a winning combination. Just look at The Sound of Music and Sister Act, both successful films and stage shows. And on Tuesday and Wednesday, Charleston can see the Broadway version of Sister Act. For those who never saw the Whoopi Goldberg flick, the story follows singer Deloris Van Cartier as her life is flipped upside down when she witnesses a crime and is then placed under witness protection and hidden in a convent. At first she’s irate, but she later develops unlikely friendships with the nuns and inspires them to start a rocking choir. “Audiences from Broadway and across the country have laughed and cheered for Sister Act, and we are excited that the Lowcountry now has a chance to get in on the fun,” says Alan Coker, director of marketing at the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center. The musical combines music and comedy with a feel-good storyline. Husband and wife duo Cherie and Bill Steinkellner (known for their work on Cheers) wrote the Broadway adaptation, and Sister Act features musical masterpieces by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors, and more).
