Sipping, Snuggie style

The Snuggie lets you binge drink in total warmth and comfort

The ridiculousness of Saturday's Snuggie Pub Crawl began at Wild Wing downtown around 12:30 p.m. and rallied on for nearly seven hours. What began as a relatively tame event turned into a Snuggie free-for-all as guests drank their way through Wild Wing, Mad River, Moe’s, The Griffon, Tommy Condon’s, Henry’s, and then back to Wild Wing.

Among the crowd were pink, blue, leopard, and zebra Snuggies, and a variety of other creative Snuggie sharks, cowgirls, Clemson fans, and Supermans. I was reminded of those wildly stereotypical college toga parties — everyone had a different way of tying up their Snuggies to keep from dragging them through the wet streets. But the rain hardly put a damper on the day, and it may have even added to the festivities. Shouts of "SNUGGIE!" were heard up and down East Bay and Market Streets, as curious onlookers wondered what the hell was going on.

The momentum of the afternoon grew from bar and bar, probably maxing out at around 50 pub crawl-goers before the alcohol started getting to folks around 5:30 p.m. and the crowd thinned out. Each bar added a star to the official Snuggie Pub Crawl lanyards, and the real troopers emerged from the marathon drinking fest with seven shiny stars after making it back to Wild Wing alive.

While the day certainly sounds like one big party, MUSC was able to raise a generous amount of awareness and money for the Children’s Hospital. Hopefully, it was successful enough to bring another one of these events back in the coming months. Until next time, long live the Snuggie.
