Playing from a healthy list of original country/blues ballads, hillbilly classics, and rockabilly songs, singer/guitarist Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent (of The Films) have spent much of the year performing and recording under the name Shovels & Rope — both as a duo and with special guests, including bassist Jonathan Gray, guitarist Bill Carson, drummer Jack Berg, and others. Their stripped-down sound is raw, passionate, and expressive. And their new self-titled collection seems to be about a melancholy life in a small town. They recorded it in a house on Folly with drummer/producer Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) at the helm. Guest players included Nathan Koci, A Decent Animal, Gina Perez, and others. Trent and Films bandmate Jake Sinclair provided additional production. Wilmington-based Americana/bluegrass quartet The Barnraisers open the show. —T. Ballard Lesemann (photo by TBL)
