Shibboleth Group Art Show

When: Oct. 22-Dec. 1, 7-10 p.m. 2010
Price: Free
Coffee joint Muddy Waters’ upcoming art opening sports a silly name, but the art is no laughing matter. Dubbed “Shibboleth,” a word defined as “a custom or usage regarded as distinctive of a particular group,” the opening showcases the varied-yet-established styles of contemporary art in Charleston. Curated by pen-and-ink illustrator Seth Corts and textile artist Lisa Abernathy, the show features everything from oil paintings to graffiti. Opening on Oct. 22 and running to early December, artists include Scott Debus, Julio Cotto, John Pundt, Nick Jenkins, Lisa Shimko, and more. Low-income art collectors take notice, as the art will be selling for cheap. For those still hung over from Kulture Klash or Blume, the coffee shop’s atmosphere should provide a nice contrast to the thumping music at Storehouse Row or Pantheon. —Jansen Cumbie
