Shag me, Baby

Shagging is an iconic dance that has a deep history in the south and particularly, the Carolinas. As summer rolls around, Charleston residents and vacationers will have the chance to experience that history in the most fitting of places, on the pier underneath the Ravenel Bridge. This weekend marks the first summer shag of the season and will be open to people of all skill levels. “The event attracts not only the seasoned shag dance experts that you would expect, but also a lot of families, couples, as well as single people in their teens, 20s and 30s. The crowd really spans generations,” says Public Information Coordinator Sarah Reynolds. “People of all experience levels are out there dancing and having a great time.” Every week will feature a different live band. This week’s music is the R&B-inspired, beachy, soulful tunes of the Royal Scotsmen Band. In addition to live music, there will also be sandwiches, hand-spun milkshakes, and more food and beverage options available for purchase at the River Watch Cafe. Reynolds feels that the scenery is what puts this event over the top. “You get beautiful views of the harbor during sunset and early evening, and almost always a nice breeze,” says Reynolds. “It’s one of the best views in town, especially when the sun is setting.” Space is limited and advanced ticket purchase is recommended.
