Re: “Charleston workers planning action as parking meter rates are set to double and enforcement expands

There is a petition on change.org to protest the extension of meter hours. To sign it, just go to the sight and search "Charleston parking meter." I encourage everyone to sign it.

Re: “Catastrophe: I can't offer an endorsement in the Charleston mayoral race

So you think that the electoral process is not a meaningful or effective process for choosing civic leaders. How should we choose them? Perhaps pick them from a list of paunchy-looking guys who sit at keyboards all day spinning out blather for alt-weeklies? H.L.Mencken once proposed that congressmen be chosen the way we choose jurors, by finding someone who doesn't want the job and forcing him to do it. That might work. At least it would weed out the narcissists and egomaniacs.

Re: “I don't believe the state's explanation for cutting down trees

@W. Plaster: You're assuming that they are going to do something useful with the timber like sawing it into boards or chipping it up for a paper mill. Sadly, in most projects like this, they just throw it into a pile and burn it. What a waste of resources.

Yeah, I mean the collective farm thing really worked well in the Soviet Union. Oh, wait. Never mind.

Re: “16-year-old Summerville student arrested for killing dinosaur hires lawyer

This is another example of the death of common sense. It was also poor judgment on the part of the teacher, who of course has the zero-tolerance policy to hide behind. Zero-tolerance policies are really zero-accountability policies. Teachers will natter on endlessly about how they are professionals and need to be treated as such. However part of being a REAL professional is exercising judgment and being held accountable for the results of that judgment. Sorry, but if you're not accountable, you're no more a professional than your school's janitor is. I won't even go into what abysmal morons the police look like in this case.
