The 2009 Kelly Cup champion South Carolina Stingrays start their 17th season this weekend with two games against the Wheeling Nailers and the Charlotte Checkers. Among the new players the team added over the summer are defenseman Dylan Yeo, forward Jake Hauswirth, and goalie Todd Ford. The additions — coupled with the returning players from last year’s championship team — will hopefully be more than prepared to defend the title. The boys were ranked at the top of the Southern Region in the American Conference of the ECHL last season, so fans can expect another exciting year. Opening night on Friday has free parking, giveaways, and the pomp and circumstance of the raising of the Kelly Cup Championship banner that sports fans shouldn’t miss. In addition, it’s Military Appreciation Night, so members of the armed forces get discounted tickets. The Boy Scouts will host a camp-out with the team following the game. Saturday night, the ’Rays battle their division rivals the Charlotte Checkers. —Caroline Eubanks
