Sand Sculpting Competition

When: Sat., May 28, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. 2011
Phone: (843) 724-7305
Price: Free

Get out of downtown. The peninsula can get a little oppressive during Spoleto, what with all the crowds, parking nightmares, and the heatwave that inevitably starts right around the time of opening ceremonies. Don't get me wrong, we thrive on the energy, but sometimes you just have to get out of downtown. And the Isle of Palms, a mere 15-minute drive away, is the perfect oasis.

Bring your shovel ... or don't. If you're feeling ambitious, you could gather a crew and enter the sand sculpting competition that takes place on the Front Beach. You can register for free starting at 8:30 a.m. at the IOP Recreation Department. Prizes will be handed out for everything from most creative to best architectural creations, with beach bikes, bocce balls, and gift certificates up for grabs. Or if you're feeling lazy, just stroll along the sand and check out other people's creations. If you're like me, you'll swear you'll enter next year and then wuss out yet again.

Stay the day. If you don't have to head back downtown for a show, don your swimsuit and hang out on the beach for awhile. Although the area around the competition can get cramped, if you head up or down the beach a few blocks the crowd will thin. Bonus: parking on the street is free. Make sure to stop in local spots like the Windjammer, Hucks Lowcountry Table, and Coconut Joe's for oceanfront fun.
