Running can be painful. But people still try to convince you it’s fun. Playlists, cool workout outfits, hell, even gadgets are hawked to try to make you forget you’re having trouble breathing. But Run or Dye may be on to something. The races, which have been held across the country, douse runners in bright, environmentally-friendly powders — a.k.a colored corn starch — to make 5Ks more of a fun time than an athletic feat. The practice is inspired by the colorful Hindu holiday Holi, a celebration of love where people run through the streets dying their friends and enemies. The folks over at Run or Dye are putting a festive twist on this month’s race, with powders available in colors like red and green. After the race, stay for the Dye Festival to “tie-dye the sky.” Participants are encouraged to wear something they don’t mind getting messy (many opt for white) and sunglasses to shield their eyes. Money from the race will benefit Charleston’s chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters, an organization that pairs volunteers and children for outings and mentoring in the tri-county area. And your heart will feel doubly better when you bring an unwrapped gift for the Toys for Tots drive.
