Roller Derby’s Season-Opening Double Header

When: Sat., Feb. 15, 5 p.m. 2014
Price: $10/adv., $15/door, $5/kids, $30/VIP
There’s more than football pads and helmets when it comes to contact sports. Case in point: the Lowcountry Highrollers. These gritty roller derby chicks take on the Charlotte Roller Girls in their first match on Saturday, and it’s a double feature with the Highrollers’ travel team, the Bruisin’ Betties, squaring off against the Charlotte B-Dazzlers. If you want to make the day even better, grab a VIP ticket, which will hook you up with food from Black Bean Co. and suds from Holy City Brewing Company. And if you’re new to roller derby, here’s the basic gist: five players from each team compete in short matchups called jams, and each team has a jammer, or the person who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. To make things more interesting, each team tries to help their respective jammer out by stopping the other jammer — even if it means body-checking somebody. After the bout, be sure to whip on over to the Recovery Room for the official afterparty.
