Rockin' on the Point with Virginia Coalition

Gidget does Charleston

If Gidget lived in Charleston, she would be all over Rockin' on the Point. (Don’t remember the fun-lovin’ ‘50s surfer gal? Look her up.) She’d fit right in with all the girls in beachy sundresses and sandals standing around in the soft white sand. She’d dig the music, and be one of the first ones to start a dance party. And as the sun set, we bet she’d sneak off to the pier to sneak a smooch with some surfer dude.

That’s the kind of laid-back nostalgia this weekly concert series inspires. Friday's event kicked off conveniently right after work with music from Leslie’s Sadler Vaden, who was followed by Alexandria Va.-based Virginia Coalition. Devoted fans set up lawn chairs around the stage and sang along, while others just stood around sipping adult beverages and enjoying the view.

And the view’s the best part of Rockin' on the Point. The sun sets over the U.S.S. Yorktown and the Ravenel Bridge, glistening off the harbor. It’s hard to beat. So make like Gidget and head to Rockin on the Point sometime, before the series is over. Upcoming concerts include Plane Jane on July 17 and a Carolina Studios Fund-raiser on July 24.
