Re: “Folly Beach Residents Report Police Harassment

After reading this article and a few more in this newspaper, I realized it is written for and by liberals. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, until you start underhandedly taking the freedom of speech to the extreme. I must say I have known Deputy Shawn James for over 33 years. You see, I am his mother. He asked me to please not respond to this negative publicity but as a mother I felt the truth needed to come out. Let me clear a few things up for the record... 1.) Deputy of the Month (many times) 2.) Deputy of the Year 2004 3.) Nationally recognized in 2004 by the National Crime Enforcement Association as Patrol Interdiction Officer of the Nation and Canada 4.) Nationally recognized in 2005 by the National Crime Enforcement Association for having the most seized weapons in our Nation and Canada. 5.) He has received over 20 running shoes from the county. These are awards for pursuing bad guys on foot. 6.) The above mentioned Deputy has served his country in the UNITED STATES ARMY, with two overseas tours, one being in a war zone. Shawn James was honorably discharged without a single blemish to his record. 7.) Deputy James then worked in the Corrections Department for Georgia and SC for four years. In that time he received several awards and not one single disciplinary action against him. 8.) He has been a Deputy for 6 years with very few complaints. 9.)Deouty Shawn James has also receive TWO lifesaving awards. 10.) Also, if you had read your local paperin regards to the shooting( www.charleston.net) you would have realized the suspect was armed with a shotgun in one hand and a pistol in another after a car chase. Let's look at a few more facts... He has worked approximately ten shifts on Folly Beach, SC. In those ten shifts he made approximately 13 drug arrests. The facts also show most of the marijuana seizures received a ticket without going to jail. Well, as a citizen who has NEVER been arrested I want those adults who are breaking the law, arrested. I don't want people of questionable character around my teenagers while they are at the beach. If you break the law, you deserve to have a consequence. As far as the comment made about Deputy James arresting his own parents, if I did something illegal I would expect to have a consequence. I am sorry, last time I looked, possession of marijuana is illegal in this nation. The problem lies with the residents of Folly Beach. I am sure not all who reside there break the law or have a criminal record. For those of you outstanding citizens...have you ever tried to speak to a drunk or a pot head? How coherent was your conversation? Were they compliant and enjoyable to be around? Have you ever tried to get the keys from an intoxicated person? I have seen this young man on duty dealing with all types of people and all I can say is he has never embarrassed me. He is an outstanding young man anyone would be proud of. You need to know him personally and professionally to know what a decent, hard-working, law-abiding, leader he is. He does so much for his community beyond just his work as a deputy. He has a heart of gold and he is a proactive Deputy. Thank goodness for great men like him serving others as a career. I can sleep at night.
