R.I.P. Cap'n Lou Albano

A send-off to wrestler and music video icon

When Hulkamania was still runnin' wild, it wasn't just Hogan that helped the World Wrestling Federation muscle its way into mainstream pop culture in the 1980s. Probably most famous as Cyndi Lauper's dad in the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" video, "Captain" Lou Albano died last week at 76. The rotund, pierced-cheek, rubber band-bearded Albano, helped foster what WWF honcho Vince McMahon promoted as the "Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection," which not only included the crazy Captain being featured in Lauper's videos ("She Bop," "Goonies 'R' Good Enough"), but led the equally "unusual" rising MTV songstress to make an appearance at the first Wrestlemania in 1985.

In 1989, Albano began playing the role of Mario for The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! — a live action kids program, perfectly suited for a man who already looked like his character. Albano was officially inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996. His spirt may live on for American kids who grew up in the '80s, for whom Cap'n Lou will forever be an inextricable part of their childhoods.
