Red, White, Black & Blue Roller Derby

When: Sun., May 24, 6 p.m. 2009
Price: $10/advance, $12/door, free/under 12
Razor-sharp skating sweethearts the Lowcountry High Rollers hit the scene hard with their first home bout back in March. They may have lost the game against the Soul City Sirens, but they won hundreds of fans in the Lowcountry with their intense badassery. The Omar Shrine Temple was filled to capacity and then some for the match, as many fans were introduced to the fast-paced sport of flat-track roller derby. Folks who’ve been waiting ravenously for the next bout can get excited: The ladies take the rink on Sunday, in a much larger venue, and they’ll be taking on the Charlotte Rollergirls B Dazzlers (seriously, what kinda pansy name is that?). Concessions and drinks will be available at the bout, plus entertainment from local punk rock act the 33’s and Charleston Splash, the semi-pro women’s basketball team that made their own debut last weekend. All ticket-holders are then invited to the all-ages after-party at the Music Farm that will include food and drink specials and entertainment from Rogue Dynamic Productions. Advance tickets can be purchased at Red’s Ice House, Tin Roof, Recovery Room, and East West Health Arts, or from your favorite roller girl. —Erica Jackson
