Red sea of revelers floods the Old City Jail

Red Rum

There seemed to be a bit of confusion surrounding the Red Party at the Old City Jail Thursday night. Some people showed up to the American College of the Building fundraiser wearing sparkling red ball gowns and subtle masks, while others wore full-on Halloween attire — body-painted devils, the Queen of Hearts, and Lady Gaga were in attendance, to name a few. Others just wore jeans with a red shirt, and a few even eschewed the hue altogether (lame). Luckily, the red lights illuminating the party helped give a spooky, slightly scandalous glow to all of the guests, regardless of what they were wearing.

A showgirl in five-inch heels welcomed attendees outside of the jail, as a group of curious neighborhood kids surrounded her, gaping and asking questions. The party set-up in the jail’s yard was luxe, with chandeliers, white leather couches, and mirrored tables contrasting the dark historic landmark towering overhead. A silent auction table offered hand-crafted pieces from ACBA students as well as more typical options like trips and wine dinners. A magician showed us what he had up his sleeve while DJ Arthur Brouthers slowly filled up the dance floor.

Guests noshed on a spread of fall fare from Good Food Catering like deviled eggs, pimiento cheese tarts, and small cups of chili — delicious, but a little too hearty for the unseasonably sweaty night. Despite the temperatures, however, the Red Party was a red-hot preview for the Halloween mayhem to come.
