Reckless Kelly w/ Micky and the Motorcars, 54 Bicycles

When: Tue., July 19 2011
Price: $15, $13 (adv.)
Though they formed in Oregon, Reckless Kelly hails from the heart of country. Moving to the more sympathetic environs of Austin shortly after their formation, they handle a twangy blend of sturdy rock rhythms, insistent hooks, and big guitars that dovetail nicely with Nashville’s recent predilection for six-strings over fiddles. However, their brand of heartland rock, Bakersfield country, and honky-tonky spirit isn’t as polished or simplistic as typical NashVegas commercial fare. Led by Braun brothers Cody and Willy, they’ve released six studio albums over the last 13 years (along with a couple smoking live discs and a greatest hits compilation) building a fervent grassroots following. Willy has an earthy baritone with which Cody frequently harmonizes. Last year, they followed the ragged rock attitude of 2008’s career highlight Bulletproof with Somewhere in Time, featuring 12 more country-minded tracks written by longtime friend and Idaho singer/songwriter Pinto Bennett. It’s a bustling, well-crafted set, though it doesn’t bite as hard or stick as resolutely as its predecessor. However, their ample talent, consistency, and increasingly respectable chart showings suggest they’re poised for a real breakthrough.
