Well said. Ideas that I could not ecplain myself so eloquently and accurately ss you have articulated here.
I sold my family home of almost 70 years downtown and listened to nauseating comments from pedicab and varriage guides.
A friend of mine who lived for generations on East Bay St. (She tood on her porch and heard carriage tour drivers discuss details of her divorce!) also hosted a guest who wanted to know if she still had slaves. You are so right that the fantasy-driven depiction of plantation life are the marketing model. Through that lens, Charleston is effectively dead. Pickled in some mythological chunk of time that wipes out everyone who has libed in Charleston since or who lives there now. Any view of it as inclusive or progressive woud spoil the view and pop the bubble. Those people just don't exist.
