The Laffey Repair Bill Is Too Damn High

With carefully parsed words, the Patriots Point Development Authority informed the state last week that the struggling tourist attraction needed an extension on its more than $9.2 million state loan. The money was used to repair the USS Laffey, with a promise from the PPDA to repay the amount by Dec. 1.

In asking for a one-year extension, the authority made no promises that it would even make good on the loan by the end of 2012. Instead, PPDA Chairman John Hagerty suggested the authority would use the time to prepare "a plan for repayment."

The board is hoping to develop the 367-acre Patriots Point property to make the military attraction more viable. The state loan was expected to provide short-term aid until a federal grant came through. Declining revenues in Washington and the plague status of targeted earmark spending has doomed the potential for a Congressional bailout.

The Laffey has been repaired and is in storage in North Charleston until the authority finds the logistical and monetary means to return the ship to the harbor site.
