Proserpina rails against her abduction to the underworld in an interpretation of Goethe's dramatic poem set to music by Wolfgang Rihm. In the American premiere of this new opera, soprano Heather Buck embodies the goddess who laments her weakness as the chorus of the Fates. Sung in German with English supertitles. Sponsored by the City of Isle of Palms and presented by Spoleto Festival USA. Approximately one hour.

Proserpina has already created big waves in the opera scene
After making its German debut in 2009, the opera was named the "world premiere of the year" by opera magazine Opernwelt. Set to the music of Wolfgang Rihm, it's based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's poem of the same name. Soprano Heather Buck returns to Spoleto (she was last here in 2007 as an angel in Faustus) as the title character, the wife of Hades who has been abducted to the underworld. "Rihm immerses the Goddess' monologue in an exquisite and luxurious music,"Opernwelt said.

The set might look familiar
Spoleto fans have the honor of witnessing the American premiere of Proserpina, which will have a slightly different look from the original German production. Set and costume designer Marsha Ginsberg was inspired by the Holy City, particularly the historic William Aiken House on King Street. It's stately, though somewhat dilapidated beauty is the main inspiration for the set.

Heather Buck is a hottie
The opera's star was named one of Spoleto's "most boinkable artists" by former CP Arts Editor Patrick Sharbaugh in 2007. She's also a damn good singer, as evidenced by her full and eclectic resume. She'll be joined by Jason Bruffy as Pluto as well as members of the Westminster Choir.
