PRICELE$$ Screening & Discussion

When: Sun., Jan. 12, 5 p.m. 2014
Price: $6
Politics in the U.S. are a mess any way you look at it. Between the political parties, media, lobbyists, and special interest groups, it’s hard to discern who’s buying whom, which is why the League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area is screening Pricele$$. The documentary examines how special interest money is used to influence governmental policies and will be followed by a discussion led by Jay Bender, the attorney for the South Carolina Press Association. “Pricele$$ is a wonderful film,” says Melinda Hamilton, the organizer of the event. “But Jay Bender is by far the more important factor. He’s going to talk about the local aspect.” And with ethics reform being on the agenda when the General Assembly meets again this month, understanding the effects of special interest money in South Carolina’s government is crucial, she adds. Tickets for the screening need to be purchased beforehand on the League of Women’s Voter’s website, and they will not be sold at the door.
