The Dance Theatre of Harlem brings its famously electric ballet to the Gaillard this October. Featuring various traditions of music that include neo-classical, contemporary, and soul, the group celebrates African-American culture through ballet. Musical scores that vary from traditional Tchaikovsky to James Brown set the stage for stories that are as familiar as two people falling in love, to scenes that portray historically significant events like the Great Migration and Harlem Renaissance. When not traveling or performing, the Dance Theatre of Harlem puts time into its outreach programs, hoping to inspire and enrich the lives of kids, educating them on the power of the creative arts, incorporating lessons on self-expression, critical thinking, and imagination. Virginia Johnson, the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s artistic director says, “Some of them will become dancers and some of them will just become exceptional citizens because of the strength and focus and discipline that the study of classical ballet gives them.” —Heath Ellison
