Big, sloppy, house-ground cheeseburgers draw the crowds to Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island. By day, it’s a bustling beach lunch spot, by night a raucous bar and grill. The rustic walls are hung with Edgar Allan Poe memorabilia, and all the burgers are named after his tales. The fearsome Tell-Tale Heart is topped with fried egg, bacon, and cheddar cheese. For our money, though, the Hop Frog with barbecue sauce, bacon, and Monterey Jack is the real masterpiece, especially when combined with a side of thin, crispy hand-cut fries and a local draft beer. Poe’s fish tacos are rumored to be pretty good, too. (Dish, Winter 2020)
