Piccolo Spoleto Finale: Unity Day Part I

When: Sat., June 12, 12-8 p.m. 2010
Price: Free

A celebration of Charleston's cultural diversity called with reggae, jazz, bluegrass, African drumming and more, capped off with fireworks. Part of Piccolo Spoleto's finale.

Huge bash
Piccolo closes out its last weekend with a bash so huge, not even the Joe Riley Stadium could contain it all. From 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., families will get to enjoy fun activities including tennis, swimming, cook-offs, food, music, and more. The finale is a three-parter, taking place at Harmon Park from 9 a.m.-1p.m., Brittlebank Park from 12-8 p.m., and finally at the Joe, where the evening is capped off with fireworks at 10 p.m.

It's a small world after all
The finale is called "Unity Day," which celebrates Charleston's cultural diversity. From 12-8 p.m., Brittlebank Park will be filled with vibrant music from a variety of cultures. Enjoy the sounds of the Suzuki Violins from Ashley Hall, dance a jig to some Irish fiddling, get down like the Greeks with the Holy Trinity Hellenic Dance Troupe, and more. The Joe will have African drumming and Motown Madness with an orchestra.

Did we mention that it's free?
You don't have to open your wallet to spend beaucoup bucks on this event. And we're not just talking about the admission fee, either. Over at Harmon Park, they're offering free recreational activities like tennis and swimming lessons. In Brittlebank Park, the City of Charleston will offer services such as health and wellness resources and seminars on sustainability and recycling, safety and crime prevention, and homeownership and debt prevention. You can also watch as Charleston's Police and Fire Departments go toe-to-toe in a cook-off using just the ingredients found in the Charleston Farmers Market.
