The pedicab peddlers should acquaint themselves with Jane Jacobs' Death and Life of Great American Cities, written on the 1960s, and reissued on its 50th anniversary. Mrs. Jacobs, who was horrified by the destruction of neighborhoods for urban "renewal" in the mid-twentieth century, advocates for the importance of diverse neighborhoods as the lifeblood of cities, no matter economic status. it is the inner connectedness of the neighborhood which cannot be ignored. As an added bonus, she is a wonderful writer and observer of what a neighborhood comprises.
