After a couple $2 Coronas at A.C.’s, Friday evening kicked off with a polished greatest hits performance by reigning elder of country music Merle Haggard. The legendary songwriter and his eight-man band wailed their way through hits like “Mama Tried” and the crowd-pleasing closer, “Okie from Muskogee.” He never missed a note during the fight that broke out, surely not uncommon at a Haggard show but odd in the closely-seated quarters of the Performing Arts Center. As Haggard wrapped things up to a standing ovation, Duwayne Burnside was just firing up his amps at Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ. His Mississippi Mafia burned through two sets of nearly continuous downright-dirty blues, keeping the capacity crowd dancing until closing time. Up the road in Summerville, editorial assistant Erica Jackson enjoyed the debut performance of the Flowertown Players’ Déjà Vu. She followed that up with an early Sunday morning at James Island County Park for the fourth and final leg of the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series, where over 300 athletes swam, biked, and ran their way to exhaustion. Saturday night was fairly tame for us City Paper folk, thanks to thunder, lightning, and a Sunday work day, allowing us to bring you this fabulous college guide.
