We can absolutely have monuments that serve as teaching points for history. Look at Germany's experience after WW2-Auschwitz is today a monument to what went wrong under the Nazi regime. The Germans are careful to limit the use by neo-Nazi groups as a rallying point. Our history is what makes Charleston special, we can certainly acknowledge it and learn from it. Add plaques like the one for African Americans at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island to provide additional context for contemporary viewers. I do like the idea of a Robert Smalls monument though-he's got a great story.
