Re: “Can't we all just get along on Folly Beach?

As a resident of this beach that also makes my living on this beach, it is the festivals that allow me to pay my rent in the winter time. Being able to maintain year round employment on Folly makes this a viable residential community - and THAT is what will keep Folly Folly. Residents. The loss of residential housing in exchange for more summer time vacation homes is a far bigger problem than a few drunk college kids at a festival. However, these issues are not entirely unrelated, as both speak to economics and demographics. The loss of year round residents has a huge impact on business out here. Walk down Center Street on a Tuesday in February and you will see how all those empty newly-turned-vacation homes are affecting this economy. It is rare to find a residential beach where you can work hard and live in paradise without needing a million dollars. That is part of what makes Folly Folly. It is a real community for real people. We need to come together to protect that as a group- which may require some give and take, and a little more live and let live.
