Re: “Book Review: The Hanging of Thomas Jeremiah

Maximus, you don't get it. Harris didn't write this book simply because a black man was unjustly hung. And it's not just about injustice. It's about a time and place, a conglomeration of people and how they coped with each other. I didn't know their were wealthy black men in South Carolina in 1775. How did he acquire this wealthin in an environment where other blacks couldn't even look a white man in the eye? How did he learn to be a pilot? He must have been able to read and write. How did he learn? Who taught him to pilot a riverboat? A not so easy feat, by the way.

This is just a fascinating story, which unfortunately, someone stuck on the racial aspect, will fail to see.
