Paul Taylor Dance Company

When: Wed., Nov. 3 2010
How many people can call themselves the greatest choreographer in the world? Not very many. I know I can’t, and I never will, and honestly, it’s one of my biggest regrets. According to Vanity Fair, Paul Taylor is the best choreographer in the world, and his eponymous contemporary dance company has been the jumping-off point for dance-world celebrities like Twyla Tharp. As part of their 2010-2011 season, the Charleston Concert Association hosts the company’s local performance. CCA President Jason Nichols believes that the company shows just how differently dance can be interpreted. “The first piece consists of two parts. Each part features the same choreography, but the cast, music, and lighting changes,” he says. “This gives the unique opportunity to observe the multiple effect that music, lighting, and individual performers have on a single dance.” The company will bring 17 dancers, who will perform pieces entitled “Polaris,” “Brief Encounters,” and “Cloven Kingdom,” all choreographed by Taylor. —Susan Cohen
