Re: “For the Left, the Civil War must be just about slavery

There's some abysmal ignorance being displayed here.

Soothsayer (not his real name), Fort Sumter was not, repeat, was not a US government fort. It had never been occupied, we in the military call that garrisoned, by the US government. It was empty and was the property of South Carolina.

The US government elected to invade the fort, some allege as instructed by coded message to the commander of the troops garrisoned at Fort Moultrie, during the middle of the night on 26 December, 1860. That act of war and the subsequent two attempts to stage additional invasions, were what began the war.

South Carolina was finally required to fire on the invaders in order to drive them off.

Also, James McPherson, while knowledgeable about troop movements, is a radical leftist historian and cannot be relied upon for much of anything beyond troop dispositions.

Re: “We staged a world-class Civil War commemoration

I wasn't at this commemoration, but a good friend of mine was. His opinion was that it was a pile of steaming dung run by PC politicians and Yankee suck ups.

Based on Mr. Moredock's essay above, I'd say he got it dead on accurate.

Re: “State redistricting will marginalize African Americans

Blacks need to get over the notion that they have special needs, that and they need to abandon the party and people that favor amnesty to another people who are moving into South Carolina to take jobs away from them.

What will blacks do when, not if, hispanics begin to demand proportional representation which will come at their expense?

It's time to move to "South Carolina for South Carolinians" and forget the race card.

Re: “For the Left, the Civil War must be just about slavery

South Carolina seceded for its own reasons. That secession was lawful, it was not an insurrection or rebellion against lawful authority.

The War Against Southern Freedom began when the US government launched an attack against South Carolina in the early hours of 26 December, 1860 and refused to withdraw peacefully.

That's what began the war, those that are US government sycophants need to deal with the unlawfulness of Lincoln's actions, and stop wasting time pointing fingers at the people and government of South Carolina.

Re: “For the Left, the Civil War must be just about slavery

The rationale for secession is wholly irrelevant. Secession was and remains solely at the discretion of the state that elects to secede.

Naturally, progressive/fascists don't like that level of freedom. They're "all for the state, nothing against the state, everything within the state" sorts of people.

What does matter, however, is why the US government elected to wage total war in opposition to the desire for self government.

Why did Lincoln initiate war? He explained his reasons many times, one merely needs to read his inaugural address to see what his rationale was. That rationale was to collect protective tariffs, that is taxes, in support of corporate interests in the northern states. Lincoln was a product of merchantilism, also known as corporatism, we call that fascism today. Lincoln was an early progressive/fascist; a political philosophy that still wages war as often as it can to bend others to its will.

The merchantilist reasons for the War Against Southern Freedom are the only reasons that matter. Those reasons are wholly the province of the US government, they were wholly immoral, murderous, and wrong.
