Park party adjusts to last-minute venue change

Prom for the Parks

The second annual Party for the Parks was relocated to the Gaillard Auditorium on Saturday night from its original outdoor locale of Colonial Lake. It was a pity that Mother Nature would not oblige and arrange a forecast of fair weather for the night. After all, the event was benefiting the Charleston Parks Conservancy — you’d think she might cooperate.

Despite the relocation, the night went off without fault, with food by some of Charleston’s most loved restaurants, an ever-flowing open bar, and an eclectic line-up of entertainment. The night, which began with live Brazilian tunes from Malandro Soul, was punctuated with performances by the Jammers Skate Crew, hip-hop dancers Mizzing Linkz, and the Homespun Hoops girls.

The live auction seemed to be a success as punters bid on items like a week in Cabo San Lucas, jewelry from Croghan’s Jewel Box, a private dinner prepared by La Fourchette’s Perig Goulet, and the ever-popular golden retriever puppy. Some men, and every woman in attendance sighed as the puppy came up for auction.

Once the auction and performances wrapped up, the dance floor was finally free to actually be danced upon. The DJ played to a diverse crowd who had at least two things in common: a love of dancing and a love of parks.

Although the weather was fine in the end, event organizers were wise to heed the weatherman’s warnings, and the volunteers and organizers were successful in making the night seamless. Hopefully next year’s event will be held outdoors and will feel a little bit less like prom night and more like a Party for the Parks.
