The universal human journey, the passage of time, and the meaning of existence don’t exactly seem like accessible topics for an audience, particularly when approached through a minimalist theater production. But maybe that’s why Our Town has become a timeless masterpiece: because it addresses those profound ideas in a simple way. Thornton Wilder’s script is filled with complex concepts, yet follows the seemingly uncomplicated story of a small-town girl and the boy next door, calling for few props and little to no set. Footlight is taking this simplicity even further by choosing not to use period costumes, though the show is traditionally set in the early 20th century. “[This production] is not about romantic nostalgia in a small town,” says Footlight’s executive producing director Richard Heffner. “It’s not a period piece. It’s about a universal theme of ongoing humanity. The human condition continues no matter what.”
