Old Crow Medicine Show

When: Tue., May 24 2011
Price: $25, $22/advance
In 2005, I saw Old Crow Medicine Show for the first time at Starr Hill Lounge in Charlottesville, Va. Singer/fiddler Ketch Secor jawed with the audience like a lounge singer, and then violently rocked the horse hair off his fiddle. Willie Watson broke four guitar strings during the night. In the year and a half following that show, Old Crow Medicine Show exploded, as the hit “Wagon Wheel” seemingly made it’s way onto the iPod of every jam-band loving frat boy and sorority girl south of the Mason-Dixon line. 2004’s O.C.M.S. was fantastic. 2006’s Big Iron World retained glimpses of their inspired earlier work, opting towards a more radio-friendly tone. 2008’s Tennessee Pusher reduced them to a commercialized caricature of their former selves. It seemed that fame had robbed the band of their best asset: their desperation. They’ve recently released a live-concert DVD, Live at the Orange Peel and Tennessee Theatre, and their live show seems re-energized.
