Re: “FILM REVIEW: I'm not there

I have to tell you Ms. Johanson, this is one of the best reviews I've read so far.Maybe the best in many ways. It is astonishing that someone who really doesn't have a "history with" Bob has the insight you have shown. Being interested in Dylan (a little more than is comfortable)I've read many of the reviews. Some most of them very favorable. A couple of them not so good or downright mean spirited of their critique of the movie and of Dylan himself which kind of proves the point. I just forwarded your review to another reviewer who really didn't "get it" at all. (http://tinyurl.com/36v28r) The thing about Dylan is that he is an ICON... in more than one sense of the word. He isn't just the Rock guy who has achieved greatness. What we are seeing is a representation of Dylan, not the man himself. I pretty much think of him as an archetype in Jungian terms. He is making the psychological or soul-making Hero's Journey. Because of who he is it is projected upon by all those who witness. And because he is who he is he, destined for greatness he really has had no choice but to make that journey, to be pushed into it by the fame and adulation. We witness it and think we see something personal, think we know who he is.(as we think we know everybody) My brother has said he thinks Dylan is shallow, and that he could have been something great! WHAT? He thinks he knows. But I think what most of see most of the time in life is our own projection. Dylan got that and he acted accordingly. The other way I think of Bob is that he has produced and performed the longest most long running piece of performance art in the history of the genre. He is not there. He is entertaining. You nailed a lot of what I'm not there is about. He isn't. And paradoxically we love him for it. Whether his fans know it or not.
