$126.3 million

That's the City of Charleston's spending budget for 2006; an increase of $10 million from 2005. The increase in taxes will (hopefully) provide more money for police, firefighters, street cleaners, etc. City employees currently at the bottom of the pay scale will enjoy a 5.5-percent raise. The cost of business licenses will increase by an average of 7 percent, and overnight city garage parking fees will increase by $2. Property tax rates will stay the same, even though property values jumped with the latest reassessment.

1,005

That's the number of traffic fatalities that have taken place on South Carolina's roads this year through last Friday, according to the S.C. Department of Transportation. In 1972, back in the muscle car era, the state suffered a record 1,099 traffic deaths. By comparison, the nation's 1,000th execution since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1977 took place last Thursday in North Carolina.

4,443

That's the number of National Board Certified teachers working in South Carolina schools, making us third-highest in the nation, behind only North Carolina and Florida. Who ever thought our state would be in the top five of something that had to do with educational success? Source: www.nbpts.org
