Re: “The immigration debate spurs all kinds of silliness at the Senate

Our leaders need to set an example by helping their constituents differentiate between illegal aliens and legal immigrants. Otherwise it becomes an issue of bigotry. I hope South Carolina Republicans can move beyond this type of ignorance.

Re: “The Race Issue

None of this is unique to Charleston. I've seen this racial dynamic at play in big cities and small towns across the country. People, both black and white, are uncomfortable with confrontation, for whatever reason. So they keep their mouths shut, and mind their own business. As a white person, I can say that a lot of whites tend run from these types of discussions because they feel that no matter what they say, unless it's in favor of the "politically correct" status quo, it will be wrong, and thus shot down as racist. While blacks and whites in America have very different perspectives on racism, if they actually listened to each other, they might also find a lot of similar feelings, fears, and concerns.

Re: “Focusing black unity

Black people need to focus on what they want and not what they don't want. Positive energy is a simple but powerful force. Further, if African Americans in North Charleston & Charleston want anything, politically, economically or otherwise, they simply have to take it for themselves, and stop waiting around for white folks to give it to them.
