"The real loss to Charleston and King Street happened a long time prior to the opening of Saks with the loss of many locally owned independant businesses. The section of King street closest to Charleston Place is little more than a high-end open air shopping mall with no unique character. The chains have priced real estate into an unrealistic bracket, and with thier ultimate demise, we have far to many empty storefronts. The very "revitalization" the area had hoped for over the past 20 years has backfired miserably"

It is when events become cost prohibitive that the free-spirited culture that we are seeking will die.
