British flair
Jazz vocalist Norma Winstone and her trio headline two concerts at the Cistern during the Wachovia Jazz Series. Since the 1970s, Winstone has collaborated and performed with some of the greats of jazz and world music, developing a distinctively delicate and expressive singing style. She started out doing standard stuff but veered into the avant garde movement along the way.

International backers
While Winstone's solo delivery is a thing of beauty, paired with the sparse but dynamic duo of Italian pianist Glauco Venier and German reedman Klaus Gesing (soprano sax and bass clarinet), the music can be deceptively moving.

The "Distances" Trio has great mileage
Winstone formed this small combo 10 years ago when Venier and Gesing, who were playing as a duo at the time, asked her to guest with them at a concert near Glauco Venier's hometown in Northern Italy. The rapport between the three was immediate. Winstone realized that this was a group that had a very original sound. Their ECM album Distances was given a four-and-a-half star review in DownBeat Magazine. It earned both a Grammy nomination in the U.S. and the Académie du Jazz prize in Paris. Their latest ECM recording is due for release this fall.
