Re: “Panhandlers meet angry resistance in West Ashley

I appreciate your comment. I wasn't going to respond, however, since I've been drinking I will. But where the hell did I gripe about the situation? Or complain? If anything I said I didn't feel it was that bad, something that's commonplace in every community. I don't let it ruin my day and move on. I recently took a trip to New Orleans where you can't go 50ft down the street without someone asking for change. Did I let it ruin my time? No, all I did was come back to charleston and realize we don't have a problem at all.
I don't truly believe you care about helping these folks find a job anymore than I do, your just saying that as a sweet back peddle. What it simply boils down to, is that you don't like it. It's new, it's a sight that people around here aren't use to, and that's great. No one like to see bums everywhere. But it's people hanging out under underpasses. They aren't traipsing along the battery or up and down king st (which if they were smart they would do, I'm sure that'd be great money). Charlestons growing, and with that comes shit like this. The infrastructure of charleston isn't even conducive for the homeless. There's no trains rolling through to bring them in, and only one way in and one way out. That right there will always keep the population low compared to other towns.
Bottom line, there's no crime being committed. I can respect that you've taken up this cause, our very own pied piper leading the bums out of town. But if you keep aggravating the situation and bringing a gun just in case something does happen, then this might turn into an even uglier situation. I'm sure if you hadn't antagonized that guy about begging you never would of been chased (if that's what really happened). And like I said before, you don't even have to give them a dime, man. Just move on and be glad your not in their spot.

Re: “Panhandlers meet angry resistance in West Ashley

I knew this was going to get white bread folks of this towns panties in wad. John Garrett seems like the biggest douche bag in this town and I'm glad I don't know him. If I were his wife or friend I'd be ashamed of him. Get over yourself and find a better way utilize your time. I am however very glad this article was written. Then, when this unstable jar head does shoot someone, there will be proof of what a hot headed George Zimmerman he was.
Some of you folks need to take a step out of your bubble. Sure there's been an influx of pan handlers in charleston, but it doesn't even measure on a scale compared to most towns. Homelessness is everywhere, you've just never been subjected to it. Is it attractive? Of course not. But they're not even downtown like in most places. They're not bothering you as you walk down the street, and our beloved tourists don't even know they're there. And the best part of it all, is you don't even have to give them anything if you don't want to! And for the record I don't, it's my choice. But if someone does want to help them that's their choice, not mine. Pretty sure that's called freedom, the thing the John Garrett claims he fought for us for.
