Nollywood Babylon comes to Park Circle

Doc on Nigerian film industry was a Sundance fave

There is Hollywood. There is Bollywood. And now we've got Nollywood. Nigeria— yes, I mean the predominantly impoverished, Third World country in Africa— now has the third largest movie industry in the world. While their budgets come close to that of American films, Nigerian filmmakers prove that it doesn't take millions, professionally trained actors, and high-tech studios to make a great film. The industry caught the eye of documentary filmmakers, Ben Addelman and Samir Mallal, whose film Nollywood Babylon chronicles this fascinating and pioneering world of cinema. On Sat., August 8, the Greater Park Circle Film Society will be screening the Sundance fave at 4 and 7 p.m. at the South of Broadway Theatre in North Charleston. Tickets are $2 for members and $5 for non-members. If you're a fan of the Hollywood that was, you'll love Nollywood, as they bring back the idea that it only takes some creativity, a good story, and an enthusiastic audience to make a good movie.
